Lost in the Woods (Crossover)

“Who’s there?”

He didn’t dare breathe. The voice belonged to a girl, probably around his age, with a strange accent…but there were charms that could do that. He’d learned by now not to be so trusting.

“I said,” the voice repeated, quivering slightly, “who is there?”

The voice sounded just as scared as he was, and he tried to take in quick, shallow, barely audible breaths, closing his eyes and resting his head against the bark. Of course, the one time he offered to patrol, the snatchers would be on the hunt. He’d apparated to a forest, any forest. He wasn’t picky. But he didn’t know where he landed.

Feet crunched on dry leaves, and he drew in his legs closer to his body in fear. He knew he’d been found, there was no way around it.

”Gale? If this is a joke, it’s not funny!”

Gale? he thought, confused. Who the hell was Gale? That was a Muggle name if he ever heard one. Tentatively he opened his eyes and leaned over, peeking around the tree. An average-looking girl was staring back at him curiously, her eyebrows furrowed. A Muggle weapon—a bow—was in her hands, pointed threateningly at him, but he felt no danger.

“Who the hell are you?” she asked roughly, though he could tell she was scared. “You from the Capitol? Don’t look like it.”

He shook his head, but didn’t stand up. Not yet. Fear was even worse than aggression in a weapon-yielding opponent. Just take Draco Malfoy for example. “No, I’m—I’m a bit lost, actually.”

She lowered the bow a fraction of an inch. “Plausible,” she commented offhandedly, taking a step towards him. When she saw he didn’t make a violent retaliation, she walked around the tree and crouched before him. “Nice glasses. You from Three?”

He shook his head, unsure of what to say, as he dug through fallen branches and twigs to look for his wand. Three? Three what? Three Broomsticks, perhaps. “Forest of Dean,” he replied, allowing his feet to stretch forwards a little. She cocked her head to the side. “Dean? Am I still there?”

She wrinkled her nose, and he could tell she was suppressing a roll of her eyes. “Forest of Dean. Boy, are you lost. You’re in Twelve, kid. Are you on morphling?”

Again, he shook his head, utterly confused. Where was he again? And what in the name of Merlin was morphling? “Look, I need to get back,” he insisted urgently, not caring if his cover was blown anymore. She was clearly as lost as he was. She wouldn’t know him. “My two friends are waiting for me. We got chased by some sna—some bad people, and I appeared here.”

She glared at him suspiciously, unsure of whether or not to believe him. “Are you a runaway prisoner?”

“Something like that.”

“Gutsy rebel. Nice,” she chuckled. “I know a guy like you.”

“Great. Is he hunted too?”

“By the law? Nah. Not quite. Are you?”

“Yes,” he admitted, shrugging. He’d found his wand. He could apparate back now. “You can head off now, if you like. I think I know my way back.”

“Suit yourself.” She stood up, brushing dirt off the back of her pants. She turned to leave, but first remembered she hadn’t even gone through conversational basics. Might as well have someone that thought she had manners. “I’m Kat, by the way.” Close enough.

“My name’s Harry,” he answered, standing up and discretely tucking the wand into his back pocket. She decided not to comment. “I’ll be going now. Good luck with that, er, Gale kid.”

She smiled slightly. “Yeah. Alright. Stay out of trouble, kid.”

“You too.”

As their backs faced each other, they couldn’t help but let out a short, airy laugh. Stay out of trouble? Yeah, right.
